The start of our Flores adventure, Labuan Bajo and beyond, the gateway to the Komodo Islands.

Labuan Bajo is a small town located on the western side of Flores, Indonesia. Labuan Bajo was once a sleepy fishing village, is currently undergoing a major transformation into becoming one of Indonesia’s most visited destinations. Labuan Bajo is fairly laid back, typical Indonesian lazy town is now becoming a new hub for divers and explorers and it has developed into a major visitors’ gateway for Komodo adventure and Flores overland adventure. We flew from Bali here, only a short flight away, just under an hour you will reach Komodo Airport. From here we took a short taxi ride to our hotel, which cost us approximately Rp50,000 rupiah. If you have an android or iPhone or any phone that can download apps, do download the “Grab” taxi app on your phone, as Grab taxis are now available in many major cities or towns in Indonesia, just like Uber taxis, they are easy to book and very reliable and affordable.

We stayed at the La Prima Hotel on the outskirt of town, a 3-star hotel with a 5-star view from our bedroom, a view to die for. If you are lucky to get the sea-view room, you will wake up to this amazing sea view of the blue ocean, with hundreds of sailing and fishing boats dotting on the water.  The hotel has a small swimming pool in addition to the beautiful beach where you can swim and sunbathe, it is really perfect for a family holiday. Our room at this hotel has a small balcony, and it is a perfect spot to enjoy the amazing Komodo sunset,  the best I have seen so far.  There are a few nice restaurants nearby our hotel, but my favourite one is the Made In Italy – Ristorante Italiano, fantastic food, friendly owner, and the staff are super friendly too.  They are located in Jl. Pantai Pede, Labuan Bajo, Flores, 86754, Indonesia, and can be contacted on +62 385 2440222 to book a table.

I have arranged a tour around Komodo in advance, visiting Komodo National Park, Rinca island, Padar Island, Pink Beach and another small island nearby and hired a small boat for 3 days and 2 nights. It took me months to find the right boat with the right price, as I couldn’t afford available tour packages offered on the internet. The result was amazing. We were on a boat with super friendly crew. Everything was included in the price, the boat, the snorkelling equipment and the meal, 3x day. Our boating experience was truly amazing, and we would love to go back again soon.
